The valve provides a graduated response. A light pedal application sends a low pressure to the brakes, while pressing further increases delivery pressure.   • Exhaust behavior. The valve must exhaust brake air quickly after pedal release, but without creating an abrupt pressure drop that upsets the system. A restricted exhaust port causes dragging brakes; internal leakage can slowly pressurize the brake circuit.

Worn or contaminated foot brake valves do not always fail completely. More often, they degrade gradually, and the driver notices the change in pedal behavior first.

  • Delayed brake release. If the brakes take an extra second to release after the pedal is lifted, the valve's exhaust port is probably blocked with oil, water or desiccant dust.
  • Brake drag. A valve that fails to fully close allows supply air to bleed into the brake circuit, keeping the brakes partially applied.
  • Harsh or grabby braking. Worn return springs or a sticking balance piston make the delivery pressure jump instead of rising smoothly with pedal travel.
